Vikings Move Practice for Eclipse but Have a Few Laughs Too

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - While many across the country tipped their faces up to the sky Monday afternoon, the Vikings kept their noses to the grindstone.

Vikings Head Mike Zimmer moved the Vikings afternoon practice, typically an outdoor session, to the field house during the solar eclipse.

After all, he wasn't taking any chances.

"Hey, I've only got one good retina. And you only get two," quipped Zimmer, who has undergone eight eye surgeries over the past 10 months.

When asked if he was disappointed to have missed the natural phenomenon, Zimmer shrugged it off.

"I can watch it on CNN or something, I guess," he said.

While the solar eclipse caused a loss of solar-power energy in various regions across the United States, the Vikings seemed unaffected. Players were especially amped up during practice, despite the location change and thunderstorm that further darkened the skies outside.

Some of the players also had fun with the eclipse via social media.

Vikings long snapper Kevin McDermott saw an opportunity and went for it, posting a well-timed Tweet Sunday night.

"I just thought it would be funny," McDermott said, adding that it likely topped his most-popular social media posts.

McDermott has been in contact with friends and family members in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, which sits directly within the "Path of Totality."

"I have a bunch of close friends who are now teachers in Nashville, and pretty much the whole city is taking class off, getting out of work, buying those glasses off of Amazon and trying to watch the totality, so it's a pretty big deal there," McDermott said. "Nashville is the biggest city in the U.S. completely, 100 percent in the solar eclipse."

Vikings tackle Mike Remmers posted a photo of his on Instagram, depicting linebacker Eric Kendricks: "Eclipse ready."
